Convergence of Multi-point Flux Approximations on General Grids and Media

چکیده
The analysis of the Multi Point Flux Approximation (MPFA) method has so far relied on the possibility of seeing it as a mixed finite element method for which the convergence is then established. This type of analysis has been successfully applied to triangles and quadrilaterals, also in the case of rough meshes. The MPFA method has however much in common with another well known conservative method: the mimetic finite difference method. We propose to formulate the MPFA O-method in a mimetic finite difference framework, in order to extend the proof of convergence to polyhedral meshes. The formulation is useful to see the close relationship between the two different methods and to see how the differences lead to different strenghts. We pay special attention to the assumption needed for proving convergence by examining various cases in the section dedicated to numerical tests.

Convergence of Multi Point Flux Approximations on Quadrilateral Grids
This paper presents a convergence analysis of the multi point flux approximation control volume method, MPFA, in two space dimensions. The MPFA version discussed here is the so–called O–method on general quadrilateral grids. The discretization is based on local mappings onto a reference square. The key ingredient in the analysis is an equivalence between the MPFA method and a mixed finite eleme...
متن کاملEnriched multi-point flux approximation for general grids
It is well known that the two-point flux approximation, a numerical scheme used in most commercial reservoir simulators, has O(1) error when grids are not K-orthogonal. In the last decade, multi-point flux approximations have been developed as a remedy. However, nonphysical oscillations can appear when the anisotropy is really strong. We found out the oscillations are closely related to the poo...
متن کاملSpatially-varying Compact Multi-point Flux Approximations for 3-D Adapted Grids with Guaranteed Monotonicity Abstract We propose a new single-phase local transmissibility upscaling method for adapted grids in 3- D domains that uses spatially varying and compact multi-point flux approximations (MPFA),
We propose a new single-phase local transmissibility upscaling method for adapted grids in 3D domains that uses spatially varying and compact multi-point flux approximations (MPFA), based on the VCMP method previously introduced for 2-D Cartesian grids. For each cell face in the coarse upscaled grid, we create a local fine grid region surrounding the face on which we solve three generic local f...
متن کاملCoarse-scale Modeling of Flow in Gas-injection Processes for Enhanced Oil Recovery
Subsurface formations that arise in the simulation of gas-injection processes for enhanced oil recovery may exhibit geometrically complex features with complicated large-scale connectivity. They must be included in simulations of flow and transport because they can fundamentally impact simulation results. However, to reduce computational costs, simulations are generally performed on grids that ...
متن کاملError Estimates for the Staggered Lax-Friedrichs Scheme on Unstructured Grids
Staggered grid finite volume methods (also called central schemes) were introduced in one dimension by Nessyahu and Tadmor in 1990 in order to avoid the necessity of having information on solutions of Riemann problems for the evaluation of numerical fluxes. We consider the general case in multidimensions and on general staggered grids which have to satisfy only an overlap assumption. We interpr...
